U.S. employees’ daily negative emotions remain elevated above pre-pandemic levels, according to the latest update of Gallup’s workforce indicators on employee wellbeing. Although all four negative emotions measured -- stress, worry, anger and sadness -- peaked in 2020, their latest measures remain higher than data Gallup collected before 2020. Gallup’s indicators also find that employees’ life evaluations have reached a record low.
Workplace interactions play a measurable role in employees’ emotions. Gallup finds that engaged employees are substantially less likely to experience high levels of daily negative emotions than those who are not engaged or actively disengaged at work.
One of the greatest influences employers have on their employees’ daily emotions is the quality of management employees receive. Seventy percent of team engagement is attributable to one’s manager. This means that team leaders play an important role in their team’s emotional wellbeing.
To create a culture of wellbeing that employees can feel, mental health initiatives should be combined with employee engagement best practices and frequent wellbeing conversations at the team level.
