Welcome to the premiere of our new program Builder Talent Tuesday. We will structure this program as we go through the season a lot like Theme Thursday. Today we will be talking about what the Builder Profile is. What is the tool? Where does it come from?

Builder Profile is the result of an initiative to try to understand the unique talents that people bring that have an entrepreneurial gift. These are people that don't just start things, but they build and sustain things. It is not just about innovation, but it is something that is created in which a customer will buy. This is something a business can be built around. The assessment was designed to discover this need, and in that discovery process we found that there are 10 Builder Talents that we focus on and what their intensity is for each of these. The great and successful builders of business possess, or account for, all 10 talents. Even if they do not possess all 10 Talents, they have the capacity to bring connections to help account for that portion of the business.

This can be distinctly different than CliftonStrengths. Whereas CliftonStrengths is a developmental tool that measures you against yourself in a sense, BP10 is a measurement against you and the best in your role of being an entrepreneur. You can take the assessment and not possess any of the Talents with intensity. In that sense, there are individuals that are not cut out to be entrepreneurs, just like there are people that are not cut out to be teachers or managers.

Builder Talents can not only be used in starting up and growing a business, but within an organization. Within organizations we see individuals that bring many of these Talents who direct them through coaching in a particular direction, or towards a particular project. This assessment has a place of identifying individuals that have a capacity that before was unrealized.

Coaching has to fall into two channels. How do they master what they do best, and how do they grow those talents? For those that don't possess all 10 Talents at a high level of intensity, what support do they need? What assistance do they need? What guidance can they lean toward, and are there things they can study? With CliftonStrengths there are some Talents that if you don't possess them you move on and find out what works for you with your Strengths. Whereas with Builder Talents you must possess, or account for all of them, and so you must find some way to get there. If you're a great coach, how do you use both? CliftonStrengths is knowing who you are, and how you use those Talents to your best advantage in all walks of life. BP10 is more specific to the role of building and sustaining a business.

Gallup's goal is to create jobs. The people that help us create jobs are the ones that build businesses and offer sustainable growth over time. In the last 2-3 years we have realized a net negative in terms of the number of businesses created in the United States. It stands to reason that if the number of businesses created has gone down, so have the jobs being created. We are inspired by the potential. If you are really good at music, someone will find you. If you are really athletic, someone will find you. If you have a Builder Profile Talent, it is not likely that anybody will find you. We want to reveal these to those taking the assessment so that they can realize their Talents and begin to build on them.

Rod Karr 's Top 5 CliftonStrengths are Learner, Intellection, Achiever, Maximizer and Self-Assurance.
