The Gallup Math Matters Study

Math skills are essential for students' success in school, work and life -- but recent K-12 national assessments show stagnant or declining student performance in math. To understand the barriers and opportunities for improving math learning, Gallup, with support from the Gates Foundation, surveyed over 5,100 U.S. adults (including parents of K-12 children) and 1,400 education leaders.

The Gallup Math Matters Study reveals that while education leaders recognize the importance of evidence-based interventions -- such as high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) and high-dosage tutoring -- many report challenges in their implementation, including staffing shortages and lack of alignment in professional learning. Parents, meanwhile, indicate they receive limited communication from schools about their child's math progress, particularly at the high school level.

These findings underscore the need for increased access to effective math interventions and improved communication between schools and families. Download the full report to explore insights from parents and education leaders on the future of K-12 math education.

83% of education leaders consider HQIM designation to be important when selecting math curriculum.
Only 25% of education leaders report that their school or district has an official definition of HQIM, and nearly four in 10 (37%) report being either "not very" or "not at all familiar" with the term.
6 in 10 education leaders say their math-related professional learning is completely or mostly aligned with their curriculum.
