What is the Gallup-HOPE Index?
Gallup and Operation HOPE joined forces in 2011 to create a measure of young people's attitudes about entrepreneurship and financial literacy. This measure, the Gallup-HOPE Index, quantifies the economic energy of America's youth. It is an annual measure leaders can use to gain insight into how young Americans envision their economic future and to understand their level of participation in the nation's economy. The goal of the Gallup-HOPE Index is to inform leaders' efforts to empower the youth who will be the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs in America. These efforts allow communities to spur and sustain long-term economic energy.
How are interviews conducted for the Gallup-HOPE Index?
Gallup conducts interviews by telephone with students in fifth through 12th grade. Gallup samples respondents from the Gallup U.S. Poll who agreed to be recontacted and indicated that they had children younger than 18. Gallup screens for the appropriate grade level and gains consent from the parent or guardian to allow his or her child to participate in the survey.
How many people are interviewed as part of the Gallup-Hope Index?
Gallup interviews approximately 1,000 students in fifth through 12th grade for the Gallup-HOPE Index study.
How often is the Gallup-HOPE Index survey conducted?
The Gallup-HOPE Index study is conducted annually.
Are the Gallup-HOPE Index samples weighted?
Yes, Gallup weights samples to correct for unequal selection probability, nonresponse, and double coverage of landline and cellphone users in the two sampling frames. Gallup also weights its final samples to match the U.S. population according to gender, age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, education, region, population density, and phone status (cellphone only, landline only, both, and cellphone mostly). Demographic weighting targets for the U.S. as a whole and individual states are based on the most recent Current Population Survey figures for the aged 18 and older U.S. population. Phone status targets are based on the most recent National Health Interview Survey. Population density targets are based on the most recent U.S. Census.
