How Does the PDK/Gallup Poll Work?

What is the PDK/Gallup Poll?

Gallup and Phi Delta Kappa, a professional association for educators, have conducted the PDK/Gallup Poll of the Public's Attitudes Toward the Public Schools annually since 1969. This survey measures Americans' opinions of K-12 public schools in the U.S. and addresses key issues facing public education in the country, such as preparation for college and career, the achievement gap, learning assessment, and the general perception of the state of public education. The PDK/Gallup Poll helps education leaders understand how public opinion is evolving over time and can inform solutions to bring positive change to the American public education experience.

How are interviews conducted for the PDK/Gallup Poll?

Gallup conducts PDK/Gallup Poll surveys via telephone with members of the Gallup Panel, a nationally representative panel, with respondents aged 18 and older who reside in telephone households. Gallup recruits all members of this proprietary in-house, probability-based, longitudinal panel of U.S. households via dual-frame landline and cellphone samples or through address-based sampling (ABS). Gallup conducts PDK/Gallup Poll surveys in English only.

How many people are interviewed in a typical PDK/Gallup Poll?

The typical PDK/Gallup Poll sample includes approximately 1,000 American adults.

How often is the PDK/Gallup Poll conducted?

Gallup has conducted the polls on behalf of PDK annually since 1969.

Are PDK/Gallup Poll samples weighted?

Yes, Gallup weights the samples to ensure that they are representative of the greater adult population living in the U.S. Gallup stratifies the samples by parents of school-aged children and parents of non-school aged children to ensure that the study includes enough parents of school-aged children for analysis purposes. Gallup weights the samples to match the U.S. population according to gender, age, race, Hispanic ethnicity, education, region, and parents of school-aged children. Demographic weighting targets are based on the most recent Current Population Survey figures for the U.S. population aged 18 and older.
